Do I really need any advice to start with SUP?

Michi Rossmeier, February 28, 2024April 12, 2026

The basics in Paddleboarding seem to be unimportant because the sport is very approachable to almost everyone. If someone gives you a big/wide enough board and the water is calm, you are probably able to somehow stand on it, at least after a little trying. But even if it seems very easy, just like when riding a bike, it is nice to know how the gears and the break work and how the route is you are riding at.

To avoid learning the hard way and having to kind of invent the sport once again (it has been done before, why would you do that?), you may want to get some information from someone who knows SUP well, you can consult YouTube videos or you may consider getting the best book about Stand Up Paddling out there, our SUP Tricktionary book.

Before getting on the water, it is recommended to get yourself a base set of knowledge about this new sport. This involves a few standard practises, of which some you need to know, some you should know and some are good to know. Such topics, and yes they are all covered in the SUP Tricktionary book along with lots of additional little tips and inspiring methods of the best teachers in the world:

  • How to choose your gear, from wetsuit to board, to paddle, to clothing, what is the best for which environment
  • Choose and evaluate your environment, know when it is good to stay back and not challenge nature.
  • Safety aspects of SUP, if you think it’s safe anyway and nothing can happen, you just don’t know,- and since you don’t know what you don’t know, it may be a good idea to inform yourself asap!
  • How to prepare your gear.
  • How to carry/handle your gear on land and in the water.
  • How to hold your paddle most efficiently, whats the best body position, where to dive the paddle into the water and where to pull it out.
  • Positions and paddle options on the board, how to go straight ahead, how to change paddle sides most efficiently
  • How to steer and turn your SUP.
